How car tax works in Bulgaria
The tax is the engine power in kW times the municipality's rate for that power band, times an age coefficient and an emission coefficient. More powerful cars pay a higher rate per kW, and cleaner engines (Euro 5 and Euro 6) get a lower coefficient.
| Age of the car | Coefficient |
|---|---|
| up to 5 years | 2.3 |
| 6 to 10 years | 1.5 |
| 11 to 15 years | 1.3 |
| 16 to 20 years | 1 |
| over 20 years | 1.1 |
The age counts the year of manufacture as year one. Electric cars pay no tax. The tax goes to the municipality where the owner is registered.
